These stunning fairy lights are not just special because they are so beautiful, they are special because of the people and processes that go into making them. Handmade by a Fair Trade organization in Thailand, each light bauble is created with the traditional Thai craft of yarn ball making. Their soft colour in daylight and the effect of the light through the layers of yarn when on at night, gives them a unique atmospheric glow. Not only are they a stylish addition to any room, they create a beautifully soft accent of texture by day and gentle lighting at night.

HOW THEY ARE MADE:
Founded by Julie Dal Pra in Melbourne Australia, Lummi & Co is part of an international trading partnership between 20 countries that believes trade is the best form of aid to improve the lives of others. Lummi light balls and lampshades provide consistent employment and income in the region. Employing 65 home workers in the areas around Chiang Mai, this Fair Trade collective currently produce 4.5 million yarn balls and lampshades each year for export around the world. Creating consistently high quality balls with the right amount of layers takes a lot of skill: too little yarn and they collapse, too much and you don’t get enough light showing through. Talented artisans are trained in how to ‘hand-twist’ the yarn to make the balls, which takes a lot of practice to ensure consistency and quality. The yarn is dyed using natural dyes and the balloons used in the production process are natural latex which is biodegradable. The glue is hand-made in house with a mix of rice flour, starch and natural non-toxic latex glue. The lights come in a PVC box that is 100% recyclable.
