HOW THEY ARE MADE
Melbourne based Kisaku work with passionate Indonesian designers and artisans specialising in heritage-infused gifts and homeware collections. Kisaku is derived from the Indonesian word “Kisahku”, meaning “My Story”. It is all about products that carry stories of the past, reflected through patterns and designs that are carefully selected and crafted by their makers, and passed on to future generations to keep these stories going. Along with their partner, Du’Anyam, Kisaku facilitates the formation of weaving community groups where women receive payment for each quality product they make. Together they provide marketable product designs and bring traditional wicker crafts to a national and international market. They also partner with local health workers and leverage existing government health programs to encourage positive behavioural changes through education on nutrition and pregnancy, and through community-based nutritious food production. Today, they employ over 350 women across 16 villages in the East Flores district, increasing the women’s income by more than 40%. By purchasing their products, you help provide better lives to these Flores women and their families through economic empowerment, reduction in heavy labour and nutritional improvement which decreases the risks of maternal and newborn complications.
